Autumn Crafts and Activities: Bringing the Colours of the Season Indoors
Autumn is a season full of rich colours and textures, perfect for creative projects. Making collages, basket arrangements, wreaths, and dried flower displays are not only relaxing but also rewarding for both the makers and those who enjoy the results. These activities bring the beauty of autumn indoors, allowing everyone to appreciate the season.
Here are a few ideas to share with your residents:
1. Pine Cone Painting
Collect pine cones on a walk and paint them in warm autumnal colours to make them stand out from the leaves, acorns, or chestnuts you may have also gathered. Pine cone painting is simple and relaxing—you don’t need to paint all the way around, making it easy to hold and dry. Once autumn has passed, replace the leaves with festive tinsel, LED Tea Lights, and get creative! Add pom poms and pipe cleaners to turn your pine cones into reindeers, snowmen, Santas, or even a turkey!
2. Twig Triangle Wreath
Create a natural wreath with just three twigs! Bind the twigs together with craft wire or twine to form a triangle. Then, using dried leaves and flowers, wrap them around the twigs to decorate your wreath. If you have conkers or chestnuts, tie them into the corners using wire or twine. For a pop of colour, add Haw berries if available or scrunch small pieces of red tissue paper and glue them to the twigs. It’s a fun way to bring a touch of nature into your home.
3. Hold a Reminiscence Session
Autumn is a season filled with fond memories—watching tractors and combines harvest the fields, collecting wild berries for jam making, or knitting scarves for winter. Host a reminiscence session where residents can share their favourite autumn memories. Some may recall scrumping apples from local orchards or getting their bikes ready for winter by attaching lights. These conversations are a great way to connect and enjoy each other’s stories.
Clocks Go Back: 29th October 2023
Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour on Sunday, 29th October 2023, at 2 am. It’s the perfect opportunity to make the most of the extra hour!
In the Garden
Autumn is a busy time in the garden as we prepare for the colder months. Now is the perfect time to create wildlife houses for insects. Use twigs, leaves, dried flower heads, and stones to make small ‘dens’ by turning empty plant pots on their side. These dens provide a safe haven for insects to hibernate over winter. Don’t forget to clean and fill the bird feeders and water baths to keep birds visiting during the colder months.
